Building Understanding and Deepening our Commitment to Justice on Juneteenth

Each year, the CMU community comes together around Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, to reflect, learn and grow. Juneteenth marks the end of chattel slavery in the United States in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The delayed realization of emancipation for so many is a painful reminder of how the promise of freedom has too often been denied for Black Americans throughout our nation's history. By building understanding around these significant historic events and their enduring impacts, we deepen our commitment to our ongoing work of creating a more just society for all.

Uplifting and Celebrating our LGBTQIA+ Community During Pride Month

This June, we celebrate Pride Month and the invaluable accomplishments and contributions of our LGBTQIA+ community. While LGBTQIA+ identities had been fighting for visibility, inclusion and equality long before June 28, 1969, Pride Month was ultimately established to commemorate the pivotal Stonewall Uprising that eventually sparked the modern LGBTQIA+ rights movement. It is a time to come together in community to honor the past and celebrate progress while recognizing that there is still more to do to achieve equity, inclusion and belonging for all.

In Celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Vision

Every January, our community gathers to celebrate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We remember his profound contributions and his deeply hopeful vision for a better world. We also use this as an opportunity to acknowledge Dr. King’s tireless efforts to further the pillars of fairness, equity and democracy, and be active around these ideals. It is a chance to embrace the importance of education and awareness that Dr. King so fervently championed, so that we can know better, do better and grow together.
